The project aims at developing a tool-set for knowledge-based systems, and prototype applications using these tools. The tool-set will be built on top of an or-parallel Prolog implementation and will apply advanced three dimensional diagrammatic interfaces for interacting with its users.
Specific objectives of the project are:
advancing the current state of research in the area of efficient scheduling within parallel logic programming systems
developing an approach to handling uncertainty in knowledge-based systems in the context of parallel logic programming
identifying and developing effective high level paradigms of diagrammatic representation and interaction, suitable for inclusion in the knowledge-based tool-set.
The main applications targeted are a medical decision support system and a financial advisory system for the evaluation of loan requests.
European links:
UK SERC project GR/G56478 (Cooperative KBS Browsing), ESPRIT projects 2471 (PEPMA) and 2025 (EDS). Two partners are also members of the Compulog European Network of Excellence.
PROGRESS AND RESULTS
The basic software components have been created and significant progress has also been made in the extension and improvement of the or-parallel scheduler. The development of the basic tool-set has been successfully finished. The basic tool-set provides frame-based knowledge representation, memoisation of instances of selected goals, and functional as well as relational notation.
A detailed design has been produced for the financial application, and work has been started on the implementation. The medical application is now in the detailed design phase.
INFORMATION DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES AND EXPLOITATION
The expected results of the project include the creation of a general tool-set usable in a wide range of advanced information processing systems. Prototype applications will contribute to the testing of ideas and system components.
