The ANALKOMP chip was developed with rate-adaptive pacemakers in mind using a fuzzy logic-based control algorithm. However it can also be used as a general purpose fuzzy logic controller or a generator of arbitrary non-linear functions. Rate-adaptive pacemakers should react as a healthy human heart would do at the same level of physical exercise, adapting the frequency of heartbeats to the level of physiological needs. The ANALKOMP chip implements a better algorithm (based on fuzzy logic theory) than the very primitive ones used by existing pacemakers in order to optimize the frequency of heartbeats. The circuit preserves a high degree of flexibility and programmability, which are the basic characteristics for digital fuzzy logic processors but, at the same time, is simpler and consumes very little power. Its application should bring more comfort to pacemaker patients as well as allowing them to be more active physically. The circuit combines miniaturization and low power consumption with programmability and flexibility. Thus, there is no similar VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) chip available on the market. Its small size (5 square millimetres in CMOS 0.8 micron technology) means a low cost for medium and high volume applications. Indeed, a tailored version can easily be developed for another specific application.
REVA 2000 offers the unique possibility of recording simultaneously patient's electrocardiogram, minute ventilation and activity in everyday life conditions over a period of 24 hours. It is crucial experimental information for physiological and clinical research, for the follow up of cardiac deficiency under therapy, for the monitoring of both heart rate and minute ventilation, for the evaluation of rate adaptive pacemaker functioning. There is no similar product on the market ; the only holter recording available is that of electrocardiogram. REVA 2000 has been developed for the needs of the HARMONY project, concerned with rate adaptive pacemakers' control mechanisms. Simultaneous recording of heart rate and of commonly used control signals, during alternating periods of rest and effort in healthy subjects and in patients, could thus be studied. The REVA 2000 prototype has been tested at the Broussais Hospital (Paris, France) and in Tallinn Technical University (Estonia). The application area of REVA2000 can be extended by adding other parameter measurements, e.g. oxygen saturation in patients' blood.
