DATA ANALYSIS TO DETECT TRENDS IN STRATOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE

Cel

To identify climatic changes from the analysis and comparison of the best available stratospheric data.

Changes in atmospheric composition whether they be in the stratosphere (e.g. involving changes in the trace gases O3, NOX, ClOX...) or in the troposphere (e.g. in CO2, CH4, H2O or the CFC's), can affect the thermal structure of both regions of the atmosphere. These gases are radiatively active at solar or infrared wavelengths (or both), and changes in their concentrations will alter the energy and mass fluxes between the troposphere and stratosphere. Any change in stratospheric temperature will have a feed back on ozone amounts in the stratosphere. Moreover, radiatively induced changes in the thermal state of the stratosphere amy lead to significant changes in the circulation in the stratosphere and possibly in the climate of the troposphere.
An important aspect of the role of the stratosphere in changing the climate of the troposphere is that temperature changes associated with changes in the concentrations of trace gases are much larger in the stratosphere than in the troposphere. Therefore, monitoring the stratosphere may allow an early detection of changes in climate.
The project has the following main elements:
- Development and use of new algorithms to retrieve satellite data.
- Updating and improving radiosonde and satellite data sets.
- Comparison of lidar data with satellite data.
- Gaining a better understanding of regional and interannual atmospheric variability.
