DOMESTIC INTERACTIVE TELEMATIC EDUCATION AND LEARNING

Cel

DOMITEL is aimed at a telematics environment for learners at home, using interactive cable television. Two-way cable TV will be demonstrated as the basic infrastructure, together with others offering a range of interactivity, from one-way video with interactive teletext to full two-way video allowing for multimedia applications and videophony. Initial project applications will include courses for immigrants to The Netherlands, English as a second language and professional development for unemployed graduate engineers. The project is expected to also result in a home learning specifications manual for planning and implementing interactive cable television..

DOMITEL, DOMestic Interactive Telematic Education and Learning aims to develop and to demonstrate a supporting telematic learning environment for home learners, using interactive cable television.

The demonstrator that will be developed will use two-way cable television (CATV) as the basic infrastructure in conjunction with other technologies and infrastructures offering a range of interactivity from one-way video with interactive teletext through fully two-way video allowing for multimedia applications and videphony.

During the first two years of the project several applications will be demonstrated.

In Amsterdam (NL) a 'inburgerings'course for new immigrants will use video-on-demand and interactive teletext.

In Dunblin/Knocklyn (IE) a 'Return to Learning Course' will combine video delivery with interactivity via a LAN overlay on the cable and an educational interface tool on the Internet called WEST.

In Birmingham (UK) an 'English as a Second Language Course' for women of Asian extraction will include live two-way video feedback made available at homes and via community access points.

In Lahti (FI) unemployed graduate engineers will attend CATV delivered Professional Development courses (live and pre-recorded) with different means for feed back.

'High-end' applications, using full multimedia and videophony, are intended to be demonstrated in a third year extension of the project, when fully two-way CATV networks will become available at large scale.

The main results of the project will be a) the realisation on the application sites of home distance learning via interactive CATV that will be continued and extended after the project's duration, and that can be disseminated to other places, and b) a 'blue-print', in the form of a specifications manual, for planning and implementing home learning via interactive CATV.
