SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS OF NOISE AND VIBRATION ON CAR DRIVERS

Cel

TO ASSES WHETHER THE COMBINATION OF NOISE AND VIBRATION IN CARS AFFECTS THE DRIVER'S VIGILANCE AND REACTIONS IN A WAY DIFFERENT FROM THE ADDITION OF EFFECTS PRODUCED BY EACH STIMULUS APPLIED ALONE.

TWO LABORATORIES (INRETS, BRON AND IRO, GARCHES) COLLABORATE FOR SUBMITTING VOLUNTEERS TO A SERIES OF STIMULI:

- NOISE ALONE AS REGISTERED IN CARS (AT 80 DBA).
- VIBRATIONS ALONE AS MEASURED IN CARS.
- COMBINATION OF NOISE AND VIBRATION AS ABOVE.

INRETS MEASURES THE REACTIONS OF PERSONS WHO DRIVE EXPERIMENTAL CARS ALONG MOTORWAYS FOR MANY HOURS, RECORDING PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS AND REACTION TIMES AS WELL AS NOISE AND VIBRATIONS IN THE CAR ACCORDING TO THE DRIVING CONDITIONS.
IRO MEASURES THE PHYSIOLOGICAL VARIABLES AND REACTION TIMES OF PERSONS EXPOSED TO THE STIMULI IN LABORATORY AND PERFORMING DRIVING TASKS IN CONDITIONS SIMULATED ON A TV SCREEN.
THE COMPARISON OF THE RESULTS IN LABORATORY AND IN HIGWAY DRIVING CONDITIONS WILL ALLOW TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF THE COMBINATION OF TWO STIMULI, COMPARED TO THE EFFECTS OF EACH STIMULUS APPLIED SEPARATELY AND ALONE.
