Cel
The primary aims are to identify the critical microbiological parameters that control and link methanogenesis and methanotrophy from marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
To answer the complex question which type of organisms are active in situ and what are the important parameters regulating their metabolic activity, this project will merge the expertise of the participating groups in a novel approach of combining in situ rate measurements and new organic biogeochemistry methods with the use of new identification techniques for studies of the involved microbial populations.
Increased knowledge about the microbial populations involved and the important parameters regulating ammonium and methane oxidation in different types of ecosystems is an essential prerequisite for regional and global models on atmospheric turnover and for the assessment of the impact of human activities.
