NATURAL RESINS AS A POTENTIAL WOOD PROTECTING AGENT

Cel

The research carried out by this project is focused on the development of
environmentally-friendly wood protection against moisture and biological deterioration based on the utilization of natural resins. The objective is to utilize optimally the water repellent and antifungal properties of natural resin systems in order to compensate for toxic biocides used for conventional wood preservation.

The project covers the production chain from the modification of natural resins, application studies and optimization of treatment parameters including improved resin coupling with wood fibre. Comprehensive measurements cover :

- detection of material quality;
- weather and decay resistance;
- service testing of large dimensions of wood; and
- upscaling of treatment processes to fit for industrial application.

It also includes methods for biocomposting of resinated wood waste and incinerating disposal experiments. Finally, 'Life-cycle analysis' (LCA) is carried out to evaluate the resinated final products with respect to their environmental measures 'from cradle to grave'. LCA methodology will be applied during the early stages in the development of novel treatment processes to identify the most promising systems. The project will also include the demonstration of the results to industry and R&D community. The dissemination of the project outcome will be executed within the participating countries by the respective partners.

The primary objective is to keep wood and treated wood as a competitive construction material by using environmentally safe natural resin systems and to support the environmental policy of the Community. This project will stimulate new ideas of alternative protecting methods for wood and wooden commodities, which have a direct and long lasting impact on our living space and natural environment.
