Experiences with the impact of subsoil compaction on soil, crop growth and environment and ways to prevent subsoil compaction

Cel

The interest in the Concerted Action is focused on subsoil compaction because contrary to topsoil compaction subsoil compaction is very persistent. Natural elevation of subsoil compaction is disappointing, artificial loosened subsoil recompacts very easily. Agriculture and forestry on compacted subsoils is sub-optimal and vulnerable to heavy rainfall or draught, resulting in the requirement of deep drainage, extra nutrients and agricultural chemicals and irrigation water. Erosion will be promoted by subsoil compaction. This makes it very important to prevent subsoil compaction. By adjusting the combination of wheel load and tyre inflation pressure to the present strength of the subsoil, plastic deformation and compaction of the subsoil can be prevented. The strength properties of the (sub-)soil are required to compute allowable wheel loads. Objectives of the Concerted Action are:

(1) to bring experts together in order to create a representative working group on impact and prevention of subsoil compaction, involving all EU-member countries;

(2) to make a contribution to an economically and environmentally friendly agriculture, based on the exchange of scientific knowledge and on practical experience with subsoil compaction;

(3) identify soils and farming systems throughout Europe where there is a risk of significant subsoil compaction;

(4) effective dissemination of the results throughout the EU by publications, harmonizing of methods and creation of data bases;

(5) determination of gaps in knowledge on subsoil compaction and formulation of needed research. The performance of next four concrete objectives will fulfil the general objectives and make the Concerted Action successful:
(a) construction of three databases compatible to related important soil databases;
(b) harmonization of methods by determination of recommendable measurement methods and ways to set-up field experiments;
(c) publication of conclusions and results on conferences and in national and international reviewed soil science journals;
(d) submission of one or more EU-proposals on required research to fill in gaps in knowledge on subsoil compaction. Three data bases will be constructed: (i) literature on subsoil compaction, (ii) impact of subsoil compaction on soil physical properties, crop production and environment; (iii) soil mechanical properties. The data bases will be compatible to the Soil Geographical Database of Europe 1:1000 000 and will be transferred to the European Soil Bureau at the end of the Concerted Action. The data bases will be made readily accessible to enable researchers on subsoil compaction and on related fields to take effects of subsoil compaction into account in e.g. crop growth and environmental lmpact models, land evaluation and in scenario studies. The information will make it possible to advisers to recommend in a better way in accordance with the effects of subsoil compaction on crop production and environment and if required advice well-founded measures to prevent subsoil compaction. The database on soil mechanical properties makes it possible to compute allowable wheel loads. The duration of the Concerted Action will be three years, starting in 1998. Four Workshops are planned; the concluding workshop will be joined to an international conference. The construction of the databases, coordination of the Concerted Action and organization of workshops will be the responsibility of the coordinator and two subcoordinators. Tasks of the participants are: constructive contribution to the databases; participate in the workshops, play their role in determination of recommendable methods and set-up of experiments; take part in the dissemination of results; have an open mind to collaborative research.

Temat(-y)

Zaproszenie do składania wniosków

Procedura zapraszania wnioskodawców do składania wniosków projektowych w celu uzyskania finansowania ze środków Unii Europejskiej.

System finansowania
