Knowledge about usefulness and meaningfulness of specific indicators in safety and performance assessment, as presented in the final SPIN report

The main result of the SPIN project is the knowledge how to use additional indicators, other than dose rates, in safety and performance assessments. It has become clear, which indicators are suitable for this purpose, due to their meaningfulness on repository safety or barrier performance and robustness against non-safety-related modifications. The testing results for all considered indicators are presented in the Final Scientific Report. For understanding by a wider public, some results are presented in simple terms in a public brochure. There is an international consensus that it may be good to take other indicators than dose and risk into consideration. The project's results can be used by all organisations dealing with numerical safety and performance assessments for nuclear waste repositories worldwide. Regulation authorities might use it as a basis for future regulations.
