Cel
The project will enable the applicant to carry out experimental researc work in a well-equipped laboratory making use of state-of-the-art ultra-high vacuum technology, surface analytical techniques and ultrashort pulsed lasers. Training will be given in all the experimental aspects of the research project as well as in the theoretical interpretation of the experimental results.
By combining the available experimental techniques, the project aims to study dynamical processes involving clusters or large molecules on surfaces in real time. The main experimental technique to be employed will be second harmonic generation (SHG), combined with LEED; Auger and time-of-flight mass spectrometry. In the later stages, pump-probe techniques involving ultrashort pulsed lasers (ps-fs) will be used in order to obtain detailed dynamical information on the processes occuring on the surface. Processes which will be investigated include the photopolymerisation of fullerene surfaces and the production of diamond-like films from C60+ ion bombardment.
