The synthesis and characterisation of cluster star, ribbon and sheet porphyrazine polymers

Cel

Research objectives and content
The development of a new system of porphyrazine-based polynucleating ligands that are capable of binding one metal ion at the center and one, two, three or four additional metal ions at the periphery is described. This ligands will be converted into multimetallic, multimacrocyclic arrays, containing star, solitaire and Gemini porphyrazine units, by complexation of one metal ion within each macrocyclic cavity and additional metal ions to the peripheral amine and/or thiolate functionality. In this way multimetallic units will be assembled into supra-order poly-macrocyclic arrays of predetermined structures via link up in a process of controlled oligomerisation. By appropriate choice of the metals, by changes in the coordination sphere of the peripheral metal and by variation in the .inert" substituent of the porphyrazine moieties should be possible to prepare an extraordinarily broad range of novel coordination complexes and derived materials superior to existing porphyrazine and phthalocyanine polymers.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
With the combination of our different experimental expertise in this field, significant further progress will be made in this important area. The resultant polymers have many industrial applications as novel magnetic, optical, and imaging materials, high performance inks and dyes, in high performance membrane technology, as infrared absorbers, oxidation catalysts, organic photoconductors and sensors...
