Crack growth and fatigue of ceramic matrix composites at temperatures up to 1600'c

Cel

Research objectives and content The objectives of this project are to improve the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of crack growth and push-pull fatigue in ceramic matrix fibre composites at temperatures up to 1600 rC. These objectives are to be realised by characterising and quantifying the behaviour of matrix cracks using novel techniques developed at QMW. The project will study the latest SiC fibre reinforced materials with Glass Ceramic, Silicon Carbide, Alumina and Mullite matrices. The project is an extension of current research being performed at QMW on particulate and fibre reinforced ceramic composites. The results, methodology and models resulting form the proposed research will provide fundamental knowledge which will be utilised to develop crack resistant high temperature ceramic matrix composites. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This project will enable me to acquire abilities and understanding of t different areas of high temperature mechanical testing of engineering ceramic composites. It will also enable me to develop an understanding of fibre-matrix structural stability at elevated temperatures using state of the art transmission electron microscopy techniques. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) This project is concerned with the development of materials for gas turbine applications. Experimental, stationary components of some of the materials to be studied have already been manufactured by Rolls Royce. Rolls Royce will supply materials and test specimens for the project and will be involved in the management of the project.
