Development of imaging and mapping of subsurface nanoscale mechanical properties with ultrasonic force microscopy

Cel

Research objectives and content
The purpose of the research project is to investigate the contrast formation in the ultrasonic force microscope for subsurface structures. The ultrasonic force microscope is a nw device for nanoscale mechanical studies which is sensitive to material elasticity. For its application it is necessary to distinguish between surface and subsurface mechanical inhomogenities. I will investigate the contrast formation for different simply shaped inhomogenities theoretically, including modelling, and compare witb experimentally obtained results. The additional phase information offered by heterodyning will be investigated theoretically and the results tested on specimens of applications interest. This shall result in the possibility of image reconstruction.
.
Trainig content, benefit and expected impact
Ultrasonic force microscopy is a promising technique and being familiar with it opens for me a wide field of possible activities in application, research and devel- opment. Research in this field gives me the possibility to extend my experience in physics, that I have acquired during m doctoral research on acoustic microscopy. I can profit from the extremely high scientific potential at the host institution in Oxford. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Cooperation Coocerning ultrasonic force microscopy are established between the host institution and Pilkington, Logitech, and Morgan Matroc in the UK, and Hoechst Portugal / Germany.
