Novel bivalent tin compounds and their use in synthesis

Cel

Research objectives and content
Organic compounds of metals have a pivotal role in organic synthesis and as catalysts, many are industrially important. Among the most widely used are those of tin (Sn), but these have invariably been of tetravalent tin. Bivalent monomeric species SnX2 (where X is a monodendate ligand) have become prominent, among the leaders in this field is Prof. Lappert in the UK, with strong competitors in Japan and USA. The project is totally novel, in that the target molecules have a bidendate monoanionic ligand: the allyl, 1-aza-allyl or beta-diketiminate. These are expected to be valuable novel 'spectator' ligands allowing the isolation of stable tin(II) hydrides and chalcogenides and other unusual derivatives which are expected to be useful reagents in organic and organometallic synthesis and thus industrially valuable.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The objective is to gain new experience, both scientific and cultural. In addition to my current knowledge of main group chemistry as applied to materials, I wish to acquire skills in molecular synthetic chemistry and in the application of novel compounds as reagents in organic synthesis. The proposal has considerable novelty and will lead to publications and possibly patents.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Prof. Lappert has strong links with industry, both in the host country and throughout the EU. The results may well have an impact in the fine chemicals industry.
