Cel
Research objectives and content
The development and testing of a prototype device for Digital Mammography. The device will be based on a combination of a phosphor photocathode for the primary conversion of X-rays and a MicroGap Chamber for the detection of the electrons produced by the photocatode. The objective of the project is to show that by using MicroGap detectors it is possible to reduce patient dose without compromising the spatial resolution offered by contemporary film-based systems. If the prototype is successful it could lead to a commercial system for digital mammography, enhancing the probability of early cancer detection.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The candidate is about to graduate having successfully completed a course leading to a Ph.D. His main subject was Digital Mammography, but with a focus on computer simulation and a minimal number of experiments. This project should be of great benefit for him, since its focus is primarily experimental. The main objective is the construction of a prototype in a laboratory which is a leader in the field of MicroGap chambers. This will enable him to complete his knowledge in the field of MicroGap detectors which are now applied for the first time in medical physics. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The proposed X-ray imager combines several technologies, some of them well established, as the erasable phosphor technology and the associated illuminating system, and the MicroGap Chamber already produced by industry for large scale applications in high energy physics, other under advanced stages of improvements, as the photocathodes production. The success of this project could lead to the start of a prototyping production of a real-life radiation imaging system.
