Electrically pumped polymer laser diodes

Cel

Research objectives and content
The high photoluminescene (PL) quantum yield and appreciable Stokes shift of conjugated polymers made them promising candidates as laser media in diluted solutions and solid blends, the ultimate target being the elaboration of electrically pumped polymer lasers operating in the visible wavelength regime. Despite the fast sub-nanosecond decay, the substantially decreased PL quantum efficiency and the photo-induced absorption, stimulated emission was observed in optically pumped neat semiconducting polymer films in several ultrafast spectroscopy studies, indicating the possible development of solid state polymer lasers.
The ultimate goal of this project is a search for appropriate polymer materials for Electrically Pumped Polymer Lasers (EPPL) and an elaboration of an optimised structure of devices. This goal can be reached with detailed knowledge of photoelectro-physics of polymers. Therefore the project is directed towards further insight in physics of excitons formation and relaxation and their influence on electrical and optical properties of polymers.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The candidate will gain new knowledge on organic semiconducting materials and their application on new emerging applications such as solid state polymer lasers. The photo-electro-physics and new Device Structure will form the objective and means of the training.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The Solid State Polymer Laser Materials and Devices is an emerging new field in Science and Engineering. Many multinationals have shown interest such as Philips and Hewlett Packard, but also OCE van de Grinten with which we have an active collaborative program. Next to those also three new start-up companies are working with us to develop new materials and devices in the general field of Photonic Polymer Materials and Devices.
