The role of smaller states of the European Union


Research objectives and content
The objective of the project is to analyse the behaviour of the smaller states in the European Union decision-making system and to compare their behaviour with the larger states. This is a case study, the smaller states behaviour will be examined within the Common Agricultural Policy and the Regional Policy. Luxembourg, Denmark, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Greece and the Netherlands will be analysed and compared with Germany, United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy. I will develop a model to explain the smaller states behaviour in the EU. The model will be based on the work of P. Katzenstein and S. Bulmer, on smaller states behaviour in international relations and domestic structure of policymaking. The first half of the thesis describes the analytical model and tests hypotheses. The second half analyses links between domestic policy-making and policy-style and the EU decision-making system with a focus on smaller states behaviour in the central EU institutions.
The findings will also indicate how the structure of the EU
might change if number of smaller states enter it in the future. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The objective is to write a Ph.D. thesis. By working on the thesis I will study quantitative and qualitative methods, i.e. how to conduct in-depth interviews and data management(SPSS). Other benefits consist of knowledge of the domestic structure of the EU policy-making in member states, decision making processes and institutional structure of the EU. The training will give me ability to explore further research on European integration and prepare me for teaching in the field.
