Cel

The Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaeskylae has embarked on a programme to study atomic nuclei under extreme conditions of spin, isospin and energy. An additional applied science programme includes medical research, environmental studies, and research into the effects of radiation on materials and devices. Basic research uses 80% of the facility's operating time. In 1996 the facility is expected to provide 5000 hours of accelerator time, of which 4000 hours will be assigned to this proposal.
The Laboratory is a new national facility with an extensive international programme in education and research on nuclear, accelerator and applied physics. The work force consists of 18 senior scientists and academic staff, 20 PhD students and 16 technicians.
The main research tool is a K=130 MeV cyclotron with an
electron-cyclotron-resonance ion source (ECR) for highly charged heavy ions and a minicusp source for light ions. Research instrumentation includes a unique, fast on-line isotope separator IGISOL with three experimental stations and a line for collinear laser spectroscopy, a high-transmission gas-filled recoil separator RITU, two comprehensive multidetector systems for gamma-ray spectroscopy, several magnetic electron spectrometers and a spectrometer HENDES for detecting neutrons and charged particles in reaction studies.
