The SAMOA video server is a compact and cost-effective 'rackable' chassis composed of an open PC-based architecture and a set of 1 to 12 video streaming modules. The control/command and management of video server applications are performed by the single (or multiprocessor) host processor operating under Windows NT. The streaming of video is done by the dedicated video streaming modules - the key to the SAMOA video server. Each module includes all features needed to stream up to 140 Mbit/s of video from a single or common video database under the control of the host processor. Streaming modules include networks as well as mass storage interfaces and an embedded processor with a real time operating system. The result is a highly scalable and efficient video server with a cost as low as 163 EUR (150 USD) per stream for MPEG2-quality video. The SAMOA server will be used in a tele-shopping pilot application with a DAVIC compliant server software (DSMCC-MHEG5-CORBA). Evolution to IP protocol is planned for the near future. The SAMOA architecture is an ideal solution for applications such as electronic commerce or video-on-demand. It offers a cost-effective entry-level system with an easy upgrade path which allows the service provider to follow the demand as it increases.
