The project explores and disseminates the use of telematics in order to provide the community pharmacy customers and professionals with information and education on responsible self-medication using non-prescription medicines. This involves the analysis of the national policies and regulations on self-medication in the European Union (EU) states. A report on policies and regulations on self-medication in Europe (Deliverable D2.1) has been completed. Databases on the state of the art of the following areas have been formed: telematic applications for community pharmacies; bibliographic references on pharmacy protocols or guidelines; information and education on self-medication; software for community pharmacies (not for administrative purposes). The design, planning, execution, data analysis and dissemination of surveys were carried out on the present status of telematics in the European pharmacies, as well as on information materials for responsible self-medication. Two types of surveys were used. The first consisted on a questionnaire that was answered by all the European national organisations of pharmacists. The second type of surveys were carried out in samples of more than 100 pharmacies of three European countries (Finland, Germany and Spain).A workshop and web pages have been set up. The definition has been made of the functional specifications of the application for community pharmacists to support their role as advisors on the right use of non-prescription medicines (D4.1). A first version of this application has been developed and is being assessed. Also, a definition has been made of the functional specifications of a touch-screen information kiosk on minor ailments and responsible self-medication to be handled by community pharmacy customers (D5.1). A first version of this application has been developed and is being assessed.
