Project "famto": ultra-fast atomic movie tools 100 femtosecond time-resolved diffraction installations for the study of ultrafast transient structural changes

Description:
Objectives:The objective of the "FAMTO" RTD programme is to push forward a new emerging field, the ultrafast x-ray science, by producing ultrafast x-ray sources and construct ultrafast x-ray facilities to allow the realisation of challenging application experiments in biology, chemistry and condensed matter physics for the analysis of ultrafast atomic reactions. These new X-ray sources of femtosecond pulse duration will have a dramatic impact in the time resolution investigating reaction dynamics currently limited to few tens of picoseconds. In particular, the detailed characterisation of structure on the atomic level by X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption with these new X-ray sources would become unparalleled tools, allowing to track very short-lived reaction intermediates.
Following the first application of the femtosecond x-ray diffraction technique done the first year of the contract, the second year of the programme has shown significant progress for the improvement of this new tools towards the study of more complex samples. First, the completion of WP3.4 and WP5.1 represents a significant steps in case of the laser-produced plasma x-ray source. WP3.4 has shown that multiple Bragg peaks experiments could be done simultaneously. WP5.1 has defined the next generation of focussing x-ray crystals by optimising the efficiency of x-ray diffraction and the number of x-ray photons that will be available onto the sample. Second, remarkable progresses have been done in WP6.4 using the synchrotron light to apply this technique to chemistry in the tens picosecond time scale.Results:
