Cel The FRRF@Daresbury offers high-specification, time-resolved techniques for the study of free radicals and excited states, with particular emphasis on understanding their roles in biology and medicine, and also on electron and energy transfer processes within novel materials. We offer access to scientific and technical expertise together with a unique combination of complementary instrumentation and associated detection systems for the study of fast reactions (10ns-1s) in condensed media. The equipment comprises of pulse radiolysis, nanosecond laser flash photolysis, confocal microscopy, and X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry.Well-equipped laboratories for both sample preparation and access to off-line instrumentation and computing facilities are also available to users. In addition, as the FRRF is part of a larger ensemble of installations at Daresbury there is always a sizeable number of visiting international scientists which provides an interactive environment for users. The FRRF is the only European institution that possesses the major techniques of pulse radiolysis and nanosecond laser flash photolysis supported by the complementary techniques of EPR spectrometry and time-resolved confocal microscopy. Detection systems such as time-resolved conductivity, time-resolved infrared luminescence and time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy, in addition to (single or multi-wavelength) optical absorption and emission spectroscopy for the complementary techniques of pulse radiolysis and laser flash photolysis at variable temperatures further enhance this facility.The current FP5 grant provides 200 experimental sessions to the FRRF for access by European scientists over 28 months expiring in December 2004.
