Relations between different geodynamic parameters and seismicity inareas of high and low seismic risks

Cel

Foreseen Results

The project wants to re-establish and improve geodynamical instrumentation to obtain the complete understanding of the deformation field variations from observations with different instruments in various geodynamical areas combined with numerical modeling.

The combined interpretation of seismicity and surface deformation will enhance the capabilities with regard to seismic prediction. Thus, this work is part of the efforts to mitigate the seismic hazard in West- and East-Europe in order to help to reduce losses both in structural damages to houses and industrial plants as well as to the population.
In earthquake regions seismic activities are combined with surface deformations which contain information about the source mechanism and -in some cases- about the magnitude of future events. The project intends to use both seismological and deformation data of different seismic zones of high and low seismic risk. A vast amount of deformation data is available especially in the East-European countries. Part of these data will be evaluated and analyzed in a combined form.

The sensitivity of the tidal strains and tilts to tectonic faults and other weakened zones of the earth crust (subject to active tectonic processes) allows to assume that a certain relation between anomalies of earth tidal deformations and recent geotectonic processes exists. Variations of tidal parameters with time reflect changes in the physico-mechanical state of tectonic structures, in particular in zones of strong earthquake occurrence. The project implies the investigation of the relation between tidal anomalies and recent mobility of the Earth's crust.

The work also covers the investigations of environmental signals (esp. from hydrology) that usually cover long-period signals in tilt and strain records.

Within this project, part of the existing instrumentation in East-Europe will be improved, and running measurements will be supported and continued. The data will be analyzed and interpreted by comprehensive numerical modeling.
