Quality Assessment of Agro-Food by Fluorescence Imaging

Cel

Foreseen Results

Quality assessment of agro-food is of essential importance for the society in Hungary and other states in Central and Eastern Europe. The compact fluorescence imaging system FIS is a technological innovation and provides an excellent tool for early detection of stress and damage to crop plants, and thus an efficient control for the production of high-quality agro-food. The FIS instrumentation will help to characterize the different stages in the development of agro-food including changes during storage and ripening of fruits.

The FIS, once established for routine assessment of agro-food quality, is a fast low-cost instrument with broad application, since it carries out a non-destructive evaluation in real time and allows to control the food quality from growing via harvest and storage to the dealer and the consumer. In a first step the innovative FIS will be a great help for the Hungarian agriculture and agro-food production in order to keep its high standard. Once established in Hungary the FIS instrumentation and its fluorescence standards for high quality food will also be available in any other countries in Europe. The physicists, plant physiologists, and food chemists engaged in this project have agreed to offer and present the new technology during scientific conferences and to all interested agro-food producers and food chemistry institutions.
In a joint research project of several working groups from Hungary, France and Germany the compact fluorescence imaging system FIS will be set up, which is of particular use to assess food quality and the physiological activity of crop plants. Food quality assessment is an essential prerequisite for the production of high quality agro-food. The new technique of fluorescence imaging being developed for stress detection of plants also permits to judge the quality and composition of agro-food. By means of fluorescence images it enables to monitor the changes in the concentration of chlorophyll (via red and far-red fluorescence), on the level of various plant phenolics (via blue/green fluorescence) as well as changes in photosynthetic activity. Thus, development, storage, ripening and aging of fruits, and the detection of diseases (e.g. fungi, pests, freezing, water loss) of crop plants and agro-food can be monitored via fluorescence imaging in order to control agro-food production and to determine its quality standard, freshness, composition and ripening-stages for human consumption.
