In the European Union 5,000 firms manufacturer agricultural machinery worth approximately 18 billion ECUs every year. In order to collect and catalogue the agricultural machinery information and to make the market more transparent, in 1984 the EC funded an international project aimed at setting up a data-bank (Agrimach). The data-bank, still maintained by three organisations in Germany, France and Italy, archives a huge amount of technical data on some 40,000 commercial types of equipment of some 2,000 firms. The increasing diffusion of information and communication technologies among manufacturers, advisory services, farmers and trade show organisations is breaking the ground for less costly and more effective systems of data collection and data dissemination than those used till now. In such a context the project is aimed at: 1) adapting Agrimach DB to the needs arisen since its design 2) complete Agrimach with parameter archives (labour standards, repair and maintenance costs, useful life of different equipment) 3) realising an electronically based system of data-exchange/data-collection 4) making the data-bank available partly on Internet and more completely on CD-ROM The goals of the project are: 1) to offer more effective, easy and appealing interfaces 2) to provide advisory services, farmers and traders with additional and more explicative data 3) to reduce the costs for data collection and data updating 4) to release products suitable for promotion actions on behalf of EU-based SME
