Studies of the radioecological and radiological impact of nuclear activities in the southern Urals with special emphasis on the Techa-Iset-Tobol-Irtysh-Ob River system

Exploitable results

The aim of the project has been to study the long-term behaviour of radionuclides in a highly contaminated environment in the Chelyabinsk region in Southern Urals, comprising a variety of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and to assess the doses to the local populations from this contamination. The area investigated is situated between 55 N-58 N and 60 E-63 E and has received the major part of the radioactive contamination of the Urals between 1949 and 1970. A further aim has been to study the radioecological impact on the Ob-river system of the operation of the Mayak Production Association. The major achievements during the project have been: During the project several sampling expeditions to the Techa-Iset-Tobed-Irtysh-Ob rivers have been carried out together with terrestrial expeditions in the EURT (East Ural Radioactive Trace). The several hundred samples collected (sediments, floodplain-soils, soil and biota) have been analysed for 90Sr, 137Cs and transuranic elements and inventory estimates have been made. The results have been published in scientific journals. The data has been compared with Russian data and agreements and disagreements between the datasets have been identified. Dose assessments for a selected village (Brodokalmak) in the contaminated region have been carried out. Average doses were about 0.1 mSvy-1, but doses to critical group may be as high as 1-3 mSvy-1.Six scientists from IBSS (UA) and IPAE (RU) have during the project been trained at RISO (DK) in radiochemical analysis and gamma spectroscopy. The total effort of the visiting scientists has been about 9 man months.Advanced equipment have been delivered to IBSS and IPAE. Intercomparison exercises have been carried out and significant improvement in the performances of the involved laboratories have been seen. Four co-ordination meetings between the partners have been held. The co-operation has been significantly expanded and strengthened by additional support from EC and national sources which undoubtedly were encouraged by the INTAS support.
