Increase of reliabiity and durability of space mechanisms intended for repeated usage under extreme conditions

Cel

The problem of the long-term operation of modern space objects such as communication space satellites, orbital space stations, shuttle-type spacecraft and space probes, demands reliability and durability of a great variety of complex mechanisms working under extreme conditions of outer space. Among these are: space telescope gates; parts of docking devices; drives of solar batteries, antennas, robots and manipulators. In recent years the design of special space mechanisms with high longevity in outer space has become one of the most important fields in the modern space objects construction industry.

The fundamental aims of this project are: creation of relevant physical and mathematical models of materials wear under vacuum conditions in a wide temperature range (based on friction thermodynamics investigations); the development of methods for prediction of wear of friction joints of space mechanisms in different operational conditions (based on thermofluctuation theory of destruction); and the development of methods for improvement of tribotechnical pairs serviceability under severe conditions of outer space (including optimum design and wear resistance coatings synthesis).

The applied aims of the project are decreased wear and increased life of friction joints. They will be achieved through the design of tribotechnical pairs with minimum heat generation at the contact area and minimum distance of sliding or rolling friction (optimum initial outlines and optimum shapes of rolling tracks ); and the development of new types of wear resistance coatings and methods of their synthesis for mechanical units with complex geometrical shapes of working surface, including diffusion coatings and alloying of surface layers with solid lubricants.
