ADAptive Multicarrier Access System

Cel

ADAMAS aims to study, implement and validate a novel adaptive OFDM Point-to-Multipoint outdoor broadband fixed wireless access system. Adaptivity will reside both in the physical layer, employing adaptive modulation schemes, as well as in the W-DLC layer, employing dynamic allocation schemes with flexible uplink and downlink sharing (DTDMA/TDD). Both a licensed and an unlicensed scenario will be demonstrated, located at 10.5 and 5.8 GHz frequency band respectively. Bit rates will be 64 Kbps-25 Mbps, for varying channel conditions or traffic requirements, while service symmetry could be varied from a full broadcasting up to a symmetric scenario. A common baseband segment will be developed that will be used for both frequency scenarios, while the two RF segments to be developed and integrated with the baseband and MAC-PHY will be of low cost. Additionally, a PSP-based novel reconfigurable integrated digital receiver architecture will be also addressed.

Objectives:
The main objective of the project is to study, implement and validate a novel adaptive OFDM Point-to-MultiPoint (P-MP) outdoor broadband fixed wireless access system. The adaptivity will reside both in the physical layer, employing adaptive modulation schemes, as well as in the DLC layer employing dynamic allocation schemes in an effort to increase the usable bit rates. The bit rate will be 64 Kbps-25 Mbps with respect to the channel conditions or the traffic requirements. Both a licensed and an unlicensed scenario will be tackled. The former will be frequency located at 10.5 GHz while the later in the 5.8 GHz frequency band. In both scenarios, the service symmetry will be varied from a full broadcasting scenario (where the uplink does not exist at all) up to a symmetric scenario (equal uplink and downlink period).

Work description:
The project workplan has two parts:
- An R&D oriented part comprising the specification and development of the modem for a broadband fixed wireless access system. In the R part, the suitability and the behaviour of multicarrier transmission will be evaluated for a range of frequencies. For the D part, the project will implement systems for the licensed and the unlicensed scenarios, in 10.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz respectively.

- A user, market, and standardisation oriented part, which covers the service requirements, the socio-economic aspects and the market trends.
Starting with the service requirements (WP2), the project will identify the user profiles/needs, and will address the overall system requirements.
The investigation of the suitability and behaviour of the multicarrier transmission system will be validated in a range of frequencies and time-varying channels (WP3). Appropriate models for channel and various RF components will be developed.
WP4 will address baseband modem and radio PHY implementation issues, including the specification and the implementation of adaptive (de) modulation and coding, channel estimation and equalization, synchronization, as well as the interfaces with the RF and the DLC.
WP5 focuses on the design and implementation of the DLC lyer. The hardware platform will be comprised of a set of functional entities, each responsible for part of the W-DLC functionality.
The results of WP4 and WP5 will be integrated as a proof of concept within WP6, in order to evaluate the system and to provide input for the techno-economic analysis performed in WP7. Also WP7 addresses market assessment and exploitation of the project results, since the demand for cost-effective delivery of broadband services is very high.

Milestones:
-M1: Overall service requirements
-M2: Identification of common modules and adaptivity parameters
-M3: Baseband modem Development
-M4: PHY Integration and testing
-M5: W-DLC Commonalities in licensed and unlicensed system
-M6: W-DLC and PHY integration and testing
-M7: Control Software
-M8: Systems Integration.
The project has successfully realised a laboratory prototype of an adaptive OFDM Point-to-Multipoint outdoor broadband fixed wireless access system. The adaptivity of the system has been realised in both the physical layer, with e.g. variable constellation sizes, as well as in the W-DLC layer, by employing dynamic allocation schemes with flexible uplink and downlink sharing (DTDMA/TDD). Two RF subsystems were manufactured, one operating at 10.5 GHz and another at 5.8 GHz frequency band. A digital baseband modem was also manufactured, coupled with an analog daughtercard that performs the D/A and A/D operations. The project successfully studied the suitability and the behaviour of multicarrier transmission for a range of frequencies. Within this framework, a series of studies were performed on a variety of Integrated Receiver Architectures, concluding to a novel Receiver architecture concept that can become a very important element for future research in this field.

Additionally, the project successfully completed a series of market and standardisation studies that covered the service requirements, the socio-economic aspects and the market trends for Fixed Wireless systems. This helped position the ADAMAS system by adapting its specifications in such a way to increase its competitive edge.

Overall, the following project Milestones were successfully achieved:
-M1: Overall service requirements
-M2: Identification of common modules and adaptivity parameters
-M3: Baseband modem Development
-M4: PHY Integration and testing
-M5: W-DLC Commonalities in licensed and unlicensed system
-M6: W-DLC and PHY integration and testing
-M7: Control Software
-M8: Systems Integration.
