European Take-up of Essential Information Society Technologies - Integrated Machine Vision Cluster

Cel

EUTIST-IMV is a TRIAL action aimed at demonstrating the business benefits which can be obtained by applying advanced machine vision technology integrated into practical applications. The cluster consists of sixteen subactivities, each aimed at a particular application of machine vision. The results of the subactivities will demonstrate that machine vision is a technology which can yield business benefits in these sectors, and has potential in other sectors. The cluster will disseminate the results and successes of each sub-activity with the aim of attracting new end-users and driving the exploitation of technology. Dissemination will take the form of Web-based material, printed material such as flyers which will be used in targeted mailshots. SMEs will be a particular target group. The measurable impact of the work will be assessed at the end of the project, and a report will be produced.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of EUTIST-IMV are: to demonstrate that advanced machine vision is a technology which has the potential to deliver benefits across a range of applications and market sectors; to show that the benefits can be achieved cost effectively; to disseminate the results of the cluster; and to identify further exploitation routes. These objectives will be achieved through a number of sub-activities. These will focus on a number of market sectors including automotive parts manufacture, paper making, timber sawing, manufacture of large structures, textile finishing and glass production. A further objective of EUTIST-IMV will be to assess the measurable impact of the project in a report produced at the end of the activity.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The cluster consists of the following sub-activities concerned with prototyping applications by integrating advanced machine vision technology: 3D-INLINE: 3d-in-line measurement for the automotive industry. The objective is to show that using integrated machine vision, 100% quality control can be achieved for 10,000,000 pieces made by machine lathe per year. ASPIC-LINUX: Low-cost, fully functional software tools for design and implementation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications. CVADCONTROL: A computer vision solution for monitoring advertising control in press and magazines. The application will demonstrate how the image recognition techniques can be used to generate a database of advertisements. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the database will be possible. IMBUS: Inspection and monitoring of bus manufacturing. This activity will provide an automatic real-time prototype for measuring large structures during manufacture. IMTEX: Image guided distortion measurement for control of a weft straightening machine. The system will demonstrate that the amount of sub-standard textile material produced during the finishing process can be reduced. KNOT: Real-time longitudinal knot and profile control system for automatic edge and trimming in sawmills. The system will show that it is possible to improve the quality of the sawn wood by 10-15% by correct cutting around knots. SAFEGLASS:Optical quality of windscreens and safety glass. The objective is to use a machine vision system to show that flaws in safety glass can be detected so as to reject faulty material and to enable better setting of the production parameters. SEESAW: System to improve the efficiency of European sawmills. Machine vision will be used to obtain information about sawblades which can be used to reduce the breakdown of saws and subsequent loss of earnings for sawmills. SIGPROEL: Trial of a signal processing electromagnetic measurements of food products. The TRIAL will demonstrate that processing the results obtained from NMR scans can be used to detect poor quality or contaminated food products. TOPCAPI: Trial of paper control and paper inspection. Surface inspection of paper on the production line will be used demonstrate that higher yields can be obtained. The projects will be of duration 12 months (fisrt phase) 18 months (second phase) or 24 months (final phase). This will be followed by a six-month period of further dissemination and exploitation. A report assessing the measured impact of the work will be produced at the end of the project. The following sub-activities concerned with prototyping applications by integrating advanced machine vision technology will be added to the EUTIST-IMV cluster. ULTRA: This Trial is addresses the cork production chains. Business benefit will be increase profitability and value yield. The technical innovation is the use of novel laser and x-ray technologies together with multisensor.
