High performance digital processing and electronics for audio and home-theatre applications

Cel

HIPRO Project aims at the acquisition of technology and tools as well as key knowledge and expertise in micro-electronics by the user (coordinator) partner. The project will concentrate on FPGA and digital PCB technologies applied in the development of audio processing/amplification systems for Home Theatre environments. Within the project, an advanced Digital amplifier will be developed integrating a Digital to Analogue Converter and an amplification circuit. The main business sector of the coordinator is the development and marketing of high quality (electronics) loudspeakers. The acquisition of modern micro-electronics technology will provide the company the capability to design and develop complex systems for audio processing and extend its business to a new market niche including Home Theatre and multimedia systems. Furthermore, of key importance is the acquisition of the capability to design of first time right subsystems following a cost effective development cycle.

Objectives:
HIPRO project aims at the acquisition of technology and tools as well as key knowledge and expertise in micro-electronics by the user (coordinator) partner. The project will concentrate on FPGA and digital PCB technologies applied in the development of audio processing/amplification systems for Home Theatre environments. The main business sector of the coordinator is the development and marketing of high quality (electronics) loudspeakers. The acquisition of modern micro-electronics technology will provide the company the capability to design and develop complex systems for audio processing and extend its business to a new market niche. Furthermore, of most importance is the design (acquisition of the capability to design) of first time right subsystems following a cost effective development cycle. The new technology will allow the proposer to go further towards the implementation of systems for other multimedia applications.

Work description:
Within HIPRO, an advanced digital amplifier system will be designed and developed.

The technical context as well as the main objectives of this project are:
(1) The design and development of an advanced Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC) to achieve better quality of the produced audio.
(2) The design and implementation of a digital subsystem for audio processing in multi-channel Home Theatre applications using a FPGA for processing the digitised audio (as it comes from the DAC). Various mixing, processing, filtering and scheduling features will be provided.
(3) The implementation of an analogue power amplifier unit that amplify the signal and drive the loudspeakers.
(4) The use of tools and acquisition of expertise in digital systems analysis and design including PCB and FPGA technologies.

The DAC will receive a signal in the form of linear pulse code modulation (PCM) and produce the analogue waveform representing the original recording. The design will use a simple filter and not cascading filters to achieve the x128 over sampling ratio, which will create an almost ideal digital signal. The DAC device can then be implemented as a bit parallel circuit. The interpolation will perform entirely with a sin(x)/x form instead of the linear interpolation accomplished in the industrial single chip products. FPGA technology will be used to implement the digital filter, while the DAC device will be implemented with high precision resistors and operational amplifiers performing at high frequency. In order to achieve the above main objectives, the project will place particular effort and emphasis on the tools to be used as well as on the appropriate training on them and the new technology. The main toolset to be used for designing and analysing the FPGA is the XILING Foundation software that support schematic and VHDL based design. In addition ORCAD digital design tool will be acquired for designing and analysing the required PCBs.

Milestones:
3 main milestones during the 18 month project:
(1) tools acquisition, training and system specs,
(2) system design,
(3) integrated system.

Main results:
(a) modern micro-electronics technology and tools.
(b) Development of new generation audio amplifier (advanced DAC, FPGA based audio processing) compliant to Home Theatre.
(c) Increase of coordinator technical capabilities and extend its market to a new sector.
