Carbon nanotubes for large area displays

Cel

Displays are an essential element for electronic access and communication of information for the "information age". The convergence of the TV world and the information society lead to conceive new displays with a large area for HDTV purpose and portability capabilities. Thanks to the large area displays developed in the project, users will have access to home cinema systems provided by the new wireless communication systems. These displays will be able to provide the same quality as CRT displays. The project will study various CVD based growth methods (pulsed laser arc deposition, unbalanced magnetron sputtering, CVD, HPCVD, PECVD, Vacuum Arc deposition) in order to select the method, which will allow to grow CNTs on large area glass substrates. The best method will be used to fabricate equipment allowing to grow at least 15' displays. Thanks to the use of CNTs, new triode structures will be conceived for more reliable low cost high performance displays. Six-inch colour displays will be fabricated as an intermediate step to validate the growth improvement results. Finally the project will demonstrate the use of CNT on specific structures for the fabrication of 15'' colour displays.

Objectives:
Large area Field Emission Displays (FED) will provide to the user the possibility to access to home-cinema services, one of the major services provided by the emergence wireless communication systems. The CANADIS project is defined in order to develop a technology allowing fabricating low cost large area FEDs (more than 40') for TV applications. A 15' demonstrator will be fabricated in order validate the concept.

Therefore, the project intends to:
i) study localised growth of nanotubes based on CVD method (pulsed laser arc deposition, unbalanced magnetron sputtering, CVD, HPCVD, PECVD, Vacuum Arc deposition) on large area glass substrates with a good reproducibility for industrial purpose,
ii) build a growth chamber allowing the growth on 15' wafers,
iii) define new triode structures to optimise the performances of the display (reliability as well as power concumption)
iv) characterise the filed emission properties of nanotubes,
v) modelise the properties of CNT
vi) demonstrate the concept by the fabrication of 15' displays.

Work description:
The project will start with the furniture of nanotubes in order to allow the work to start in the various workpackages (WP). The prospects of a future large area FED-relevant technology based upon the use of CNT as field emitter are intimately linked to the success of synthesis routes aimed at the growth of selected CNT located at defined positions on large area glass substrate. This central aim of the proposed project is served on a number of different levels by the co-ordinated synthesis drive of WP1. P1 will mainly investigate in situ-localised growth using CVD techniques (pulsed laser arc deposition, unbalanced magnetron sputtering, CVD, HPCVD, PECVD, Vacuum Arc deposition) at low temperature for compatibility with the use of glass substrate. The goal will be to select a method allowing growing CNT on large area substrates. This material will be used in WP2 to study new triode structures (planar type) to improve the overall performances of the display (in term of reliability, brightness and power consumption). The improvements of the growth as well as the process will be undertaken thanks to characterisations (microscopies, spectroscopies, field emission measurements) and modelisations performed within WP3 and WP4 either on crude CNTs or on processed tubes. In these WPs, experimental as well as theoretical studies will be performed for a better understanding of the electronics properties of these CNTs with a particular interest for electron emission properties. In WP5 15'' displays will be fabricated using the best technique selected in WP1. The display will be defined as a demonstrator of the capabilities to fabricate a 40' display. In a first step, as a spin-off of the work done in WP1 and 2, a 6 inch coloured displays will be fabricated as an intermediary result. Finally, WP6 will provide a first study of a preliminary market for medium size displays for airplane entertainment chosen to initiate the interest of the large area TV for these displays with a cost evaluation of the fabrication of 403 displays.

Milestones:
In-situ growth of localised CNT using CVD methods and catalyst.
Selection of the best method for reliable growth on large area substrate at low temperature.
Fabrication of a CVD reactor for growth of CNT on large area substrates.
Selection of the best triode structure for high performance FED. Comparison between experimental data and theoretical models.
Modelling of field emission properties.
Fabrication of a 6' coloured CNT based FED.
Fabrication of a 15' coloured CNT based FED.
