Secure Banking Application Assembly using a component based approach

Cel

The main objective of the BANKSEC project is to tailor an offer for the banking industry that will assist organisations to build systems that meet their requirements using components. This is proposed to be achieved by defining and implementing a process driven software environment for component selection and application assembly and validating it in real life banking applications.

BANKSEC aims at advancing the practice of component based software development by addressing real business requirements in key domains for Banking. The project will tailor a process for component selection and application assembly using an appropriate software environment, supporting key business requirements for dependability, changeability and security. Developments will be guided by real-life user requirements and validated in specific applications in real-life Banking applications.

Objectives:
Component based development provides opportunity for efficient development of secure, changeable and dependable Banking systems. The project aims at defining techniques for specifying dependability requirements for components and trusted application frameworks that can accommodate non trusted components and at designing and developing the necessary software and process infrastructure for component selection and application assembly. Validation in critical domains for the industry (as e.g. interoperative corporate lending support) in two Banks and feedback from user groups involving different functions from different Banks will combine towards creating an Offer for the industry that is both innovative and effective by enabling Banks to build and operate systems that conform best with business requirements of dependability and changeability and by reducing the cost of application/system development and support.

Work description:
The project workplan is deployed to ensure:
co-ordination of all activities towards producing a concrete Offer to the Banking industry, comprising of software tools for component selection and assembly into trusted systems meeting dependability requirements and of a methodology for process support;
validation in advanced Banking applications such as interoperative support of corporate lending;
getting as many users involved early in the project for ensuring a user driven component selection process, observing that key business requirements of security, dependability and changeability are just right;
thus avoiding irrational costs;
incremental delivery of results that can be disseminated, ensuring continuous interaction between development, dissemination and exploitation activities as well as project reviewing activities;
maintaining users involved throughout the project for continuous evaluation and market orientation.

The workplan is structured in three main phases (Research, Development, Validation):
During the Research Phase, WP 1, "Component Procurement Process" aims at a business vision and plans the path towards defining a process for component selection and application assembly;
WP 2, "Component Dependability Specification" defines techniques for specifying dependability requirements for components;
WP 3,"Application framework Architecture" proceeds with the detailed design of the trusted application frameworks.
During the Development Phase, WP 4, "Prototype Environment for Component Selection & Assembly" implements the solution and delivers the architecture and supporting tools.
During Validation Phase, WP 5 "Banking Pilots" consists of validating and improving the developments in real life banking applications.
In parallel, WP 6 "Exploitation & Dissemination" and
WP 7, "Project Management" ensure project steering, market orientation, results communication. Business strategy formulation and quality assurance issues.

Milestones:
The expected result is a process driven software environment for component selection and application assembly meeting dependability requirements immediately exploitable after the project end. Milestones are:
P1: Completion of Research Phase yielding component procurement process model and trusted application architecture frameworks.
P2: Completion of Development yielding Prototype environment, business Plan.
P3: Completion of Validation Phase yielding validated Final Prototype and Handbook.
