In the framework of MOBILITY it has been developed a new digital satellite TV receiver for the maritime mobile environment, which will be able to receive current DVB-S delivered TV services. The hardware part of this terminal could be structured in three different parts: - The planar array; - The mechanical pointing subsystem; - The control devices; The antenna is a planar phased array formed by 32 active sub-arrays of printed patches. The phase of each sub-array is controlled electronically by a phase shifter. This arrangement provides the antenna beam scanning capability in one plane. In our terminal, the mechanical pointing subsystem in made up of two motors controlling the azimuth and polarisation matching motions in the antenna. A careful study and simulation has been carried out in order to know the kinematics characteristics of the maritime area, which determine the design used in the prototype. The control system accepts, as input, the orders from the PAT (Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking system), and processes them in the proper way to produce the control signalling for the motors.
MOBILITY is an ambitious project, since it develops not only an antenna but also a fully autonomous mobile system for satellite reception. After the development of the antenna and PAT a test bed was designed and finally the complete system was integrated. The result was the expected system and the behaviour was tested during the January 2003, MOBILITY carried out its first trials in the trip that weekly realises the Juan J. Sister ship between Cádiz and several island in the Canaries. The system is able to follow the satellite signal with independence of the ship motions. A radome isolates the antenna system from the weather conditions.
