The number of vehicles on the roads is increasing enormously and the fact that transport is a key factor in modern economies is a reality. Nowadays the most critical issue related to road traffic is the number of accidents which is still very high. In order to achieve the goal to drastically reduce the number of accidents on the road, car manufacturers in Europe are now working to develop Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and services towards the aim defined in the White Paper of the European Commission of reducing the number of fatalities on european roads by 50% in 2010. The main objectives of AIDER are: - to develop an efficient Rescue Management System able to improve rescue operations: - to reduce the time of intervention and optimise rescue procedures; - to create a direct co-operation between on-board systems and control centres. In order to accomplish the mentioned tasks, the consortium started with the analysis of the state of the art concerning emergency call infrastructure and collecting requirements from a number of strategic stakeholders. In parallel, a survey about innovative technologies and about in vehicle black box requirements has been performed. Since the central theme of the project is the passenger medical status identification, this activity has been achieved in cooperation with medical support to understand it not only from an engineering point of view but also from the medical point. The following point have been technically implemented: - the in-vehicle system in charge of monitoring the vehicle's status, to store the vehicle's parameters as black box, to identify an accident and to start an automatic SOS call; - the Control Centre designed to manage the voice and data link to the vehicle system, to process the received data and to identify the accident severity; - the communication link. Technical implications of results: - make vehicles safer, in particular through technical harmonisation and support for technical progress - improve road infrastructure, in particular by defining best practices and disseminating them at the local level and by eliminating accident black spots. Encourage road users to improve their behaviour, in particular through better compliance with the existing legislation, basis and continuous training for private and professional drivers and by pursuing efforts to combat dangerous practices.
