Generic Evaluation Platform for Services Interoperability and Networks

Cel

IASON project aims to design and develop a novel, flexible and highly efficient system capable of operating as a uniform evaluation platform, able to measure the performance of networks of diverse technology, such as, ISDN, SS7, ATM, GPRS, 3G UMTS, IP as well as the services provision and any type of inter-operability among them. The IASON evaluation platform will make it possible to bridge the gap in evaluation systems by providing the ability to measure the performance of heterogeneous network technologies (i.e. GPRS, 3G UMTS and ATM, ISDN) and offer the ability to measure the quality of services over diverse network technologies. The IASON solution will exhibit an open architecture that is meant to be fully flexible, as it will be a single system able to connect to a wide range of telecommunication networks

Objectives:
To design, develop and integrate the hardware and software sub-systems for providing the modular and generic architecture that is required to enable the evaluation procedures of heterogeneous networks, services and applications.
To design and adopt the evaluation methodology of network traffics in terms of generic measurements set that best represent the quality of protocol, services and real users applications operation.
To identify and deliver the required protocol stacks (3G and 2G UMTS, GPRS, GSM, ATM and N-ISDN) functionality so that to enable the extensive evaluation of networks based on existing sub-systems from partners, on both signalling and user plane communication sections.
To validate IASON system's ability to assess networks and services performance by setting up a trials environment on the 3G UMTS platform of Siemens and Alcatel.

Work description:
The project is organised in six (6) workpackages bringing the necessary partners and ingredients for assuring successful execution and accurate market orientation. The technological background is offered from 4Plus, Teletel and Solinet (with impressive credentials in the telecomms business), Partners 1&2 (the two Europe-wide leaders in telecomms manufacturing) and Vodafone (the Europe-wide leader in mobile services provision). Bradford University having extensive R&D background in traffic models and reconstruction techniques will help in the definition of traffic models that best describe protocols and services operation when utilised by real users applications (i.e. VoD). The course by which the project will come to completion is by first defining the requirements of IASON system (WP2), which in turn will be used to define the specifications of the system. This will be achieved having scalability in mind for future modifications and extensions. The next stage (WP3, WP4) involves the detailed design and implementation of both the H/W and S/W subsystems, which includes the physical interface access boards, centralised protocols/services evaluation functionality and advance interworking/switching unit and traffic generation/analysis logic (for services and user protocols), all adapted to CompactPCI backplane bus architecture. All the preceding steps converge with the integration of the subsystems to the IASON evaluation platform (WP5). User tests along with optimisations will end with a complete system deployment, in assessing real mobile services offered by a complete 3G UMTS network infrastructure of Siemens and Alcatel. The marketing assessment (WP6) will be performed at predefined points during the course of the project, but will also be an ongoing and continuously updated process, to compensate for changes in market needs as well as adopting new requirements as they develop.

Milestones:
1) IASON services and protocol evaluation and measurements specification
2) IASON system architecture specification
3) IASON prototype
4) IASON prototype capabilities exploitation by conducting UMTS trialsThe resulting IASON evaluation platform will be capable to measure the performance of networks of diverse technology, such as, ISDN, SS7, ATM, GPRS, 3G UMTS, IP as well as the services provision and any type of interoperability among them.
