Ethernet Switching at Ten Gigabit and Above

Cel

The project will:
- evaluate prototype chip sets for their functionality and interoperability;
- develop architectures for 10 Gigabit Ethernet high performance switch design;
- develop a prototype switch to demonstrate mastery of system integration issues;
- use the prototype switch to demonstrate LAN, MAN and WAN functionality and interoperability;
- contribute to the ongoing standardisation processes;
- study architectures and techniques for higher speed Ethernet technologies;
- validate the emerging 10 Gigabit Ethernet in Europe and evaluate its impact.

OBJECTIVES
The project will develop an 8 port, scalable to 64 port, non-blocking 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) switch and demonstrate it over the LAN, MAN and WAN. 10GE is a developing standard and capable of working over long distances over fibre. We will evaluate performance against the standard, and see how much further it can go. We will use this experience to contribute to the subsequent standard.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The 10GE standard will not be ratified until 2002, so much of the early work in the project will be done with pre-standardisation components:
WP1 specifies the design and system architecture for a 10GE 8 port switch;
WP2 studies the high speed systems engineering problems at 10Gbit/s and beyond;
WP3 develops the i/o and processing for 10GE and a 10GE uplink for an existing switch (for testing purposes;
WP4 designs and produces the switching fabric;
WP5 develops the h/w and s/w to control and manage the switch;
WP6 assembles and tests the 10GE switch;
WP7 carries out an extensive program of tests with two data service providers over MAN and WAN distances;
WP8 considers ways of scaling to speeds higher than 10 Gbit/s - probably 40Gbit/s;
WP9 is management of the project;
WP10 is a strong contribution to standards in this area Two non-funded telecom/data service providers are involved in WP7.
