Optical MEMS Based Infra Red Spectrometry

Cel

The existing market of infrared sensor systems is currently restricted by the expensive infrared detectors. In particular the main impediments to market growth of multi-wavelengths optical sensors operating in the near-IR or mid-IR are:
1) the limited supply of IR photodetector arrays, often resulting in a single-supplier situation;
2) the high NRE (non-recurring engineering cost) for custom arrays, and;
3) the high unit-cost of the arrays.
If all these impediments could be reduced then many more applications would become feasible, especially applications where optical sensors are sold to individual consumers instead of to companies. The proposed microsystems will increase the performances of the existing IR spectrometers by the substitution of a sensor array with a single sensor: this substitution will be done by very precise optical MEMS, avoiding the present mechanical systems that can reduce the cost of the spectrometers but decreasing performances. The reduced cost will enable a wide diffusion of MOEMS based IR spectrometry to bio, gas and chemical sensors.

Objectives:
The marketing goals of the Micro Shutter based IR detectors are to, first, replace the expensive PbS and exInGaAs arrays in existing infrared systems and second, capture a large fraction of the current markets for filter and moving-grating based instruments and then third, grow the whole industry several times by-passing reduced system cost on to end users;
-achieving better system performance than with photodetector arrays;
-making the full wavelength range available and;
-enabling users to reduce the calibration cost per instrument.

We believe that this industry, by the introduction of Micro Shutter based IR detectors, can easily double, and probably much more than double, once the part cost problem disappears and moderate, complexity instruments can be marketed to individual consumers. Products like IR spectrometers can be redesigned combining low cost technologies with the peculiarities of the microsystems. Besides the development of the optical MEMS proposed in this project could find application out of the sensors field, in an even wider field such as displays.

Work description:
The MEMBIRS project is aimed at the development of low cost IR spectrometers based on optical MEMS technology and is addressing at many issues of general interest ranging from environment to medical to industrial applications. In fact a wide diffusion of the IR spectrometry is currently limited by the production and operational cost. The system developed within the project will be composed by an optical element dividing the light beam in its components: a narrow part of the dispersed beam is selected by mean of a linear array of micromechanical shutters. The intensity of the transmitted beam is than detected by a single sensor. An optical MEMS device will be specifically developed within the project. The proposed microsystems will increase the performances of the existing IR spectrometers by the substitution of a sensor array with a single sensor: this substitution will be done by very precise optical MEMS, avoiding the present mechanical systems that can reduce the cost of the spectrometers but decreasing performances.

Milestones:
The main results of the project can be summarised as follows:
- development of low cost optical MEMS technology;
- new approach on IR light modulation based on micomechanical systems;
- drastical reduction of the cost of spectrometers enabling a huge diffusion in new fields of application;
- with the new approach no calibration is required with advantages in terms of performances and time saving.
The main deliverable of the project will be a prototype of an advanced MEMS based IR spectrometer.
