The interactive MUSIC NETWORK

Cel

Multimedia music content owners and distributors (publishers, archives, libraries, music shops, conservatories, etc.) are strongly interested in exploiting new methods of distribution and new interactive multimedia music functionalities. However, they are afraid of losing their content or money by selecting non standard, unsuitable and unsafe formats. This problem is mainly due to the lack of communication between themselves and research institutions. Technology providers often do not know the real needs n this area. MUSICNETWORK will implement concrete actions to bring music into the interactive media era stimulating both parties. To this aim, a set of activities will be implemented for understanding needs, assessing the research and technology, integrating the available technologies, and pushing them in the right direction in order to cope with the real needs. A WWW portal and specific periodic reports/surveys will be published and distributed, conferences and workshops will be organised. Integrated solutions and guidelines will be produced with some proposal standard and/or guidelines for the adoption of current active standards. MUSICNETWORK will have the relevance and strength for driving music industries into the interactive multimedia era.

Objectives:
The main objective is to create a community to bring the Music European industries and content providers in the interactive multimedia era. This becomes possible by putting together research institutions, industries and experts which have the required relevance to reach the unique objective of studying and defining multimedia music modelling and coding for the new age:
1) to create a collaborative environment so as to make easier the access to research results and technological solutions for music content providers and corporate users;
2) to provide training, technology transfer and access to expertise in the multimedia music field;
3) to use research institutes and standardisation bodies (such as Mpeg7, W3C, Mpeg21, etc.) in order to consider problems f music coding for multimedia integration and distribution aspects while preserving the owner rights;
4) to increase the competitiveness of content providers and distributors in the market of multimedia music delivering;
5) to increase awareness, confidence, consensus by content owners and providers towards the new solutions, technologies and music modelling, thus removing problems that limit the digitising of music archives;
6) to prepare the FP6 technology needs and development for the digital music;
7) to stimulate the exploitation of new functionalities that may open new markets for new ways of music distribution: e-publishing, e-book, virtual libraries, entertainment mobile, m-commerce, etc.

Work description:
Several activities have been planned to make sure the above objectives will be achieved. The MUSICNETWORK will be built relying on direct contacts of project partners and dissemination activities within major European events, usually attended and co-organised by partners (Frankfurt Musik Messe, MILIA, MIDEM, WEDELMUSIC, EVA, ICMC, ISMIR, ICME, etc.). The MUSICNETWORK will set up 7 different working groups on the most important aspects, so as to bring music industries in the interactive multimedia music ag. The working groups will integrate their results in order to produce new standards or guidelines allowing to use present standards in the area of coding multimedia interactive music on the account of music industry's different needs. Project partners, multimedia companies and research institutes will produce trial applications customising their present applications to give evidence to the effectiveness of the provided network support. The project duration is 36 months, the work plan is organised into 6 WPs plus management.
User Requirements: identification of use cases, collection of reference data highlighting key problems and corresponding solution validation, gathering current best practices in music technologies, definition of test cases for tools and models.
Network Detailed Specification: WWW portal specification, working group and services detailed planning, definition of objective measures to assess the state of the art and technical solutions, definition of procedures for joining new MUSICNETWORK members.;
Working Group Set up and Management: 7 working groups will be set up and kept working all along the project:
coding music notation; music coding for libraries;
multimedia standards for music;
distribution;
protection;
coding for print impaired people;
managing images of music sheets.
For each working group: set-up, state of the art review, standard review and assessment, market monitoring and analysis, technology watch and contribution to standards bodies, model definition and/or guidelines productions, technical workshop organisation and user group management, technical support towards MUSICNETWORK users. Each group will manage a list of added members and a user group of interested people. Each working group will produce specific reports, tutorial notes, guidelines, www pages to explain the best practices, the best solutions and how, whether possible, the current standards can be used to model the specific aspects of the working group.

Working Group Results Integration: integration of defined models for music coding, distribution, execution, etc.; solicitation of trial set up to be performed by the music industry, research and development institutions; validation of trials with members and end-users, technology updated considering research and standard. Assessment and Evaluation: by means of external evaluators and consolidated models in terms of scientific and technological quality and innovation, community added value and contribution to the EU policies, contribution to community social objectives, economic development and scientific and technological prospects, management and resources.

Dissemination and Exploitation:
dissemination and promotion of benefits received by the network;
organisation of public events, attending conferences and fairs, preparation of the exploitation plan for the MUSICNETWORK: flyers, posters, demos, CDs, etc.;
Set up and maintenance of the WWW portal for dissemination and service providing;
Dissemination of results, stimulation of the adoption of solutions and guidelines in research and industrial projects.
The project will be managed considering the assessment results and will maintain the management as light as possible.
