Microfluidics Roadmap

Cel

The ultimate goals of this proposal are to create visions, identify technological gaps and streamline RTD activities in the field of microfluidics by elaborating a roadmap. The proposed work will bring together key players from different disciplines on a European level thereby creating the critical mass needed for the development of ambient intelligent products. Personal interviews will be held and questionnaires sent out in order to have a sound information base. Companies will be informed about the Roadmap via Internet, email, publications. The Roadmap will also be presented at conferences and fairs. It will raise awareness for this technology field and interweave intra-European activities. The roadmap will bring benefit to industry (including SMEs) as well as RTD institutions by providing a basis for strategic decisions concerning future products and necessary RTD work. It is also thought to support the European Commission in implementing priority themes of the 6th Framework Programme.

Objectives:
We create a technological roadmap for the field of microfluidics, one of the fastest growing branches of microtechnology. In this strongly interdisciplinary field, there currently exists a broad gap between the technological capabilities on the one side and the know-how available on the developers backend side and the awareness, needs and expectations among potential customers acting on the front end. This project aims to streamline RTD efforts with the demands of system suppliers and end users by plotting a temporal roadmap for the advances expected in microfluidics and by defining the future requirements of the customers. To ensure acceptance of the roadmap, we inquire the expertise of key European players throughout the course of the project, including the validation of results. Furthermore, the roadmap proposes support measures which will substantially contribute to the new EU policy towards IPs.

Work description:
We kick off the project by defining and structuring the strongly interdisciplinary and diverse topic of microfluidics into major classes of applications. Then expert interviews and workshops will be held to generate data on the future capabilities and needs of microfluidic technology. At this stage we define and categorize several factors, which are likely to impact the technological progress and markets of microfluidics. A set of trends will be worked out and described in scenarios as seen from a future point of view. Next, we make a forecast on the prospects of each type of market segment. We then broaden the base of information entering the study by sending out questionnaires to various groups like RTD people and customers in Europe. In addition, personal interviews will be held with selected key players and information available from existing European networks like EUROPRACTICE and NEXUS will be incorporated. A preliminary roadmap will be drawn and feedback from key external experts will be inquired. The involvement of experts will enhance the quality of our prognosis and also of the effectiveness of the government measures proposed to support the evolution of Europe to a world leading supplier of microfluidic technology. In addition, the roadmap facilitates the involvement of SMEs in the field. An encompassing dissemination strategy has been developed in order to ensure that the project achieves its goals. A web page will be created informing about the roadmap. The roadmap will be presented on conferences and fairs. Mailings via email will be send out. Additionally publications in common journals and magazines will inform about the roadmap. European networks like NEXUS and EUROPRACTICE will also be utilised for dissemination.

Milestones:
Each project phase concludes with a report summarizing and systemizing the present state of the project and the information obtained so far. This includes reports on the definition and the structure of the topic, a scenario report, several interview/workshop reports, questionnaires and their evaluation and finally the overall microfluidics roadmap. Considering the character and short length of the project of only 9 months for generating all reports, we identify the reports mentioned above with the milestones.
