A synthesis method for hybrid separations

1.Interactive flow-sheet generation methodology based on separation efficiencies. The advantage and unique feature of this methodology is that it guarantees feasibility of separation, pollution prevention and near optimal (if not optimal) energy consumption, without requiring rigorous simulation and optimization studies. The methodology is simple and visual;
2.Computer aided tools to validate and verify hybrid separation schemes;
3.The project enables consulting service and corresponding software to identify candidates for application of hybrid separation schemes and candidate separation techniques (including selection of external agents such as solvents and membranes);
4.The project will also open the road to consulting service to generate alternative separation schemes with lower energy consumption and improved environmental impact;
5.Advanced numerical tools and methods for the solution of this type of optimisation problems;
6.development of innovative flow-sheets for the processes that have been selected for the industrial cases.
The aim of the project is to investigate and establish a new methodology that is able to synthesize and design multi-functional separation processes with a view to enhanced efficiencies in terms of energy/separation and improved control of environmental impact, employing hybridization and process intensification principles.

In particular,

- Investigate alternative and/or novel separation processes for energy intensive separations, that may involve hybrid separation technologies, e.g. membrane distillation, reactive distillation etc.
- Investigate suitable modelling/analysis and synthesis techniques that enable the identification of hybridization possibilities and the potential benefits compared to conventional processes, on a systematic basis. - Address and quantify operational issues in hybrid processes, as energy management, control requirements, etc., so as to include them explicitly in the synthesis methodology.
- Validate and verify the results of the above in separation problems of practical importance.

It is envisaged that a systematic methodology that can identify, quantify and exploit hybridization potential in separation technologies and address the separation synthesis problem beyond the traditional separation systems, will lead to new, flexible and effective technologies for the separation sections of EC processing iDdustries and strengthen their competitive position, reducing production costs.
