Monitoring fatigue loads on wind turbines using cycle counting data acquisition systems

Cel

The objective is to compare the influence of typical European wind converter sites on fatigue loads at the blade root of the turbine. It is planned to monitor the fatigue loads for at least one year in order to adopt and verify load assumptions for different wind turbine configurations and sites. The improved fatigue load assumptions will be of great importance for the development of the next generation of large scale wind turbines and will help to make them economic.

Measurements of fatigue loads on wind converter rotors are carried out at three sites available to the project participants. The German Wind Energy Institute (DEWI) investigates fatigue loads on a wind farm featuring flat terrain and pitch controlled wind turbines. In Greece the Center for Renewable Energy Sources (C.R.E.S.) gathers load spectra from a stall-controlled turbine at a site with varying turbulence intensity due to complex terrain. At Alsvik wind farm the Aeronautical Research Institute of Sweden (FFA) observes a stall controlled wind turbine. Thus the influence of typical European sites on fatigue loads at the blade root of the turbines can be compared.
