Exploitable results
The objectives of this project were two-fold. First, to show the feasibility of using sol-gel technology for the deposition of the active coatings with a view to establishing a potentially low cost technology. Second, to develop new materials with better optical and mechanical properties using a technique known as sputtering in order to increase device specifications as well as the feasibility of a commercially viable system from a cost point of view.
The context of this work is the need to develop a new generation of glazing products which have better thermal characteristics than their conventional counterparts. The benefits will be a more energy-efficient building.
