The use of wind power to generate hydrogen has received little attention to date. The small-scale, stand-alone, wind-powered hydrogen production system designed and developed during this project therefore represents a significant move forwards in this field.
Despite several major European programmes investigating the integration of solar photovoltaic power plant with hydrogen electrolysers, the possibility of using wind power to generate hydrogen has been afforded little attention. This project was designed to examine the reasons for this disparity. The main aim of the project was to design and build a small-scale, stand-alone hydrogen production system, powered by a wind turbine generator. The four major technical objectives of the project were to, firstly, assess the hydrogen electrolysis system undergoing intermittent operation, secondly to provide a comparison of wind turbine operation strategies for dedicated, stand-alone hydrogen production; thirdly, to assess the economics of the system and finally assess the suitability of the technology for use in small community power systems.
