Distance Education Information Courses through Networks

Rezultaty

The aim of the DEDICATE project was to produce cost-effective distance education courses in Training for Information Literacy. The DEDICATE courses consist of the following modules: -Unit 1: The Internet as a learning environment-introduction to the technologies and tools to be used throughout the course. -Unit 2: Search for information in a specified subject area. -Unit 3: The institutional context. -Unit 4: The design of an information literacy course for a specific user group within the institution. -Unit 5: Learning and course review. These are supported by a structured Resource Base with literature in the form of books and articles to support the learning process. A DEDICATE Study Overview is provided to assist participants in their planning activities. The developed courses have been successfully implemented at five test-sites in Central and Eastern Europe: Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia; Veszpr?m University, Hungary; Riga Technical University, Latvia; Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania; Nicholas Copernicus University, Poland. Of the 34 participants who enrolled for the distance learning courses, only one dropped out. A variety of evaluation methods were used for the formative and summative evaluation of the courses. Practical learning outcomes from the DEDICATE courses were the new courses in Information Literacy which will be given at the five sites. The general conclusion after the evaluation is that “taking part in the DEDICATE courses has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We-the participants, managers and tutors-would like to build on this work and develop courses for new groups of participants. The courses are supported by a flexible networked learning environment, which consists of a DEDICATE Course Web site which is tailored to the curriculum objectives of the courses. Subject resources are available in the form of Into Info programs (developed from the EU EDUCATE project). Communication between participants, tutors, technical support staff, mentors, counselors and technical support staff can be supported by means of an asynchronous fully WWW integrated conference programme.
