ELECTROLYTIC AL-REFINING OF AL-SCRAPS IN CHLORIDE MELTS FOR PRODUCTION OF HIGHLY PURE ALUMINIUM.

Cel

DEVELOPMENT OF A SYSTEM FOR ELECTROLYTIC REFINING OF AL SCRAPS BASED ON NEW ELECTRODE MATERIALS AND CELL GEOMETRIES TOGETHER WITH ANODIC SLURRIES TREATMENT (SUPPORTED MEMBRANES).
It has been concluded that the refining of aluminium scrap should not be performed at temperatures below 660 C. The aim of electrorefining of aluminium scrap or pure aluminium under conditions, which are of technical relevance, especially with sufficiently high material yields, energy efficiencies and space time yield could only be reached by operation temperatures above the melting point of aluminium.
The problem of separation of 2 liquid aluminium phases with regard to a technical application of the refining process could not be solved by a vertical, dense sintered alumina plate. The reason for this estimation is the unfavourable potential distribution on the surface of the liquid aluminium electrodes if the process is extended to electrode areas of approx 1 m{2}. Therefore, only with separation by a melt impregnated, vertical, porous diaphragm structure does it seem to be possible to achieve the aim. Because of the solubility of alumina in chloride fluoride electrolytes only a pure chloride melt with aluminium chloride concentrations between 10 and 20 mol% should be used.
-CATHODE DEVELOPMENT - INVESTIGATION OF DIFFERENT REFRACTORY METALS SUCH AS VANADIUM, MOLYBDENUM, TUNGSTEN AND OF STEEL CONTAINING THESE REFRACTORY METALS IN HIGH CONCENTRATION AND OF TITANIUM, ZIRCONIUM, TANTALUM AND OF TIB2- COVERED CARBON, TITANIUM AND STEEL.

- ANODE DEVELOPMENT - PREPARATION OF MIXED OXIDES LIKE SILICIUMOXYNITRIDE, NI- OR COTITANATE, BATIO3 AND SRTIO3 OR OTHER MIXED OXIDES WHICH EXHIBIT AT 650 TO 750 CELSIUS DEGREES SEMICONDUCTING PROPERTIES OR WHICH ARE EVEN GOOD ELECTRONIC CONDUCTORS UNDER THESE CONDITIONS.

- NEW VERTICAL CELL GEOMETRY FOR CATHODIC AL DEPOSITION - A NEW VERTICALLY ARRANGED BIPOLAR CELL STACK IS FORESEEN AND WILL BE CONSTRUCTED AFTER SEPARATE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW CATHODES AND ANODES AND AFTER REACHING THE AIM TO COUPLE ANODES AND CATHODES TOGETHER.

- ELECTROASSISTED SEPARATION OF ANODIC SLURRIES - THE WORK AT SOUTHAMPTON WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE SEPARATION OF CU, ZN, MN AND TI FROM ANODIC SLURRIES RESULTING FROM ALUMINIUM ELECTROREFINING. THE WORK WILL INVOLVE THE STUDY OF THE THERMODYNAMICS AND KINETICS OF CHARGE TRANSFER FROM AN AQUEOUS TO AN IMMISCIBLE ORGANIC SOLUTION IN THE PRESENCE OF HYDROPHOLIC CHELATING AGENTS. A NEW SEPARATION METHOD BASED ON REDOX EXTRACTION WILL BE ASSESSED.
