Physical and mechanical properties of densified veneer wood (DVW) forstructural applications

Exploitable results

The project revealed that densified veneer wood (DVW) is a material which can be used to reinforce timber in order to sustain highly concentrated loads. In build up structural joints, densified veneer wood glued on the shear surface of timber elements, was found to increase the strength capacity over a factor of 4 compared to traditional joinery. This has been accomplished in combination with the tube dowels developed in the project. Tube dowels are mechanical fasteners which after being positioned in the holes are expanded in diameter to remove all clearance. The benefits of DVW include savings of timber (15% to 30%) in construction, improvement of the structural behaviour in portal frames and the ductility at ultimate limit state. As well as the design and consulting engineers, other benefiting sectors include the producers of densified veneer, glued laminated timber and hydraulic equipment.
