Characterization and observation of the seafloor with a new multi-beam front-scan sonar system

Cel

The general objective is to make a significant progress in the acoustical methods for observing and analyzing large areas of the seafloor. The proposal associates the elaboration of an original forward looking sonar, and the investigation of the relevant processing tools to produce bottom characterization, bathymetry and imaging.
The proposed system can apply for surveying the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor as well, depending on the mounting platform. The technical aspects ranges from the design to the building of: - antennae that can sustain high pressure,
- electronics that performs on-line beamforming, pulse compression, imagedisplay, interferometry and storage.
The scientific aspect of this proposal is built around the full advantage that can be taken of the high data redundancy and the multiple angles of view that the frontal geometry provides, and the interferometric capability. The following issues will be stressed:
- The proposed system is foreseen as a powerful tool for characterization ofthe sea bed, ù Mapping of the relief (interferometry and stereophotogrammetry)
- High resolution imaging (fusion of successive overlapping snapshots) - Preview of the sea-floor (relief and images) ahead of the platform. The processing techniques will be developed and tested with data acquired at sea over well known areas, allowing a thorough evaluation of the final results from the end-user point of view.
The expected outcome of this project is a validated new concept of surveying tool.
