RESEARCH OF ENERGY SOURCES SUITABLE FOR UNDERWATER VEHICLES

Cel

The objective of this project is to compare energy sources (excluding nuclear) suitable for use on board submersible Remotely Operated Vehicles. These energy sources may be used both in the oceanography and marine science fields, and for vehicles ranging from small unmanned Free Swimming Vehicles to larger manned types of vehicles.
An assessment of all nonnuclear energy sources suitable for submarine applications has been carried out with reference to the power requirements of existing commercial underwater vehicles. Databases were developed covering both the characteristics of submersibles currently in service worldwide and the power source technologies which could be utilized in underwater applications. Over the 2700 vehicles of 480 types have been identified, and the applicability of 15 specific and generic power source technologies have been investigated. It is concluded that the flexibility of both workhorse and survey vehicles can be improved by the utilization of onboard power sources.
The output of the project will be in the form of a data base and a manual for use by underwater vehicle designers to aid them in their selection of appropriate energy sources.
