COST EFFECTIVE ACQUISITION OF HIGH QUALITY 3D SEISMIC DATA DURING BAD WEATHER PERIODS

Cel

The aim of the project is to demonstrate that new data processing algorithms and new acquisition techniques can be applied to reduce weather induced seismic noise to a level which is comparable to standard acquisition techniques used today. The project will allow oil companies to utilise a larger acquisition window in the North Sea which will strengthen the North sea as an acquisition target.
The main objectives of the project are :
1. To reduce the cost of seismic acquisition by reducing the amount of bad weather standby. This will make the North Sea more competitive compared to regions with less severe weather conditions.
2. To demonstrate that much more weather noise can be tolerated if new data processing and acquisition techniques are applied.

The project aims to demonstrate that weather noise which is a large cost factor for North Sea seismic data acquisition can be removed to a large extend by new processing algorithms. Simultaneously the project evaluates to which extent new acquisition techniques can help to reduce the impact of bad weather on the seismic data acquisition.
The innovation parts in this project are several :
- Use a new filter and interpolation algorithm to remove swell noise.
- Use inversion techniques to remove gaps in the data
- Acquire data in multiple passes.
Two data sets shall be acquired over the same area at the same time. The first data set is a commercial seismic survey with today's quality specification. The second data set will be contamined with swell noise to an extent which would not be acceptable for a commercial survey. The project, if successful, will demonstrate that with new advances in data processing and different acquisition techniques most of the weather induced swell noise can be removed and that petro-physical parameters derived from both data sets will be comparable.
