Cel
The ultimate aim is to assess the effectiveness of current management measures for protecting cod stocks. To do this we need to improve our understanding of the horizontal and vertical movements of cod and the influence of environmental factors on them so as to improve our ability to predict individual movements and seasonal distributions of cod stocks.
Specifically this will require
(a) description and quantification of horizontal and vertical movements of individual cod in the four study ecosystems;
(b) identification of environmental factors which influence the horizontal and vertical movements of cod;
(c) identification of behavioural signatures in otoliths from recaptured individuals that can be used to relate DST results to population level processes;
(d) establishing how the collective behavioural decisions of individual cod affect the spatial and vertical dynamics of populations/ stocks and
(e) assessing the implications of the results to fisheries assessment and management.
